Prime Medical Case Study: Building Big Relationships in 100 Square Feet

Prime Medical is a company that proves that small trade show spaces like portable booths can make a statement and elevate your business when done correctly. A 10×10’ booth can make such an impact that you could begin a relationship with a literal household name – CLOROX – at your very first trade show. Read on to find out how Prime Medical made an impression on one of the most recognized brands on the planet.

“We exhibited our first 10×10’ booth at APIC – ADM Two helped us choose the right booth and graphics to make a great first impression,” says Wendy Brady, vice president of marketing of Prime Medical.

Prime Medical came to market with a brand called “Safety.” They wanted to showcase the product in a clean, professional way and avoid the table and pull up banners type of display. A 10×10’ portable display was a good way to have a booth that looked like a mini showroom, which adds credibility. At the same time, the portable booth was budget friendly so they didn’t blow their marketing budget out of the water with their first trade show. We’ve discussed this before in other articles about Portable trade show booths (link to Portable Trade Show Booth section here).  ADM two listened to Prime Medical’s challenges and took their existing design to a whole new level.

“New companies sometimes cut corners but it’s important to have a professional appearance in trade shows – our 10×10’ booth added a level of professionalism that we wouldn’t have had with a table and banners,” says Brady.

Adding to the level of professionalism that helped their brand soar is Prime Medical’s booth representatives. The staff are knowledgeable, engaging, and great relationship builders, which helped position Prime Medical as a trustworthy company that has roots and a future. A booth can get you halfway there, but super polished brand representatives like Prime Medical’s staff land big deals with companies like CLOROX.

As far as visuals went, through our collaborative work with Prime Medical on their booth, we helped make smart decisions about graphic placement to achieve maximum exposure. We used our understanding of the dynamics of a trade show booth and worked with Prime Medical create a booth with points of interest and smooth traffic flow so as not to make people nervous with a crowded space. Having a welcoming, open space is just as important as graphics, technology and staff. Some attendees won’t even enter a booth that seems crowded or doesn’t have enough exit points.

“We came to ADM Two with a design from our graphic designer and they helped to take these ideas and make them work for display and trade show booths, which is much different from traditional print and digital design,” says Brady.

The booth was a success. Prime Medical came away from that APIC show with interest from Clorox, and developed a relationship with the brand. Now they are growing the size of their booth and ADM Two is helping them with the new design.

Says Brady, “With designing the new booth, now we have experience and history, and we better understand the dynamics of a booth and where to place certain graphics, and the trade show dynamic of design that helps people walk through your booth more comfortably, creating interest. Now we can work together to create something even more interesting and draw more traffic. ADM Two has been really helpful during the entire process, they made it fun and creative and they communicate with us where and when we need. They’re really flexible.”

We just LOVE this exhibit designed by our friends at Classic Exhibits Inc. The way they used the graphics to give the effect of stepping into a gorgeous, bright field of sunflowers is simply genius. You can literally escape reality by just standing in front of this little booth with big impact. The wood accents with greenery feels cozy and gives off just the right natural vibe that the name NuNaturals imparts. Great work packing a big punch into a 10×10′ space!

This Payfactors Group booth is fantastic in so many ways. The hanging windows with greenery are breathtaking! The open concept with cocktail tables and a bar feels relaxed and welcoming – you know your’e not going to get stuck in this booth and if you did you probably wouldn’t mind. We love the industrial style of the windows and lighting complimented with rustic elements like the wood flooring and overgrown vines. A lot of interior design styles were blended here, with great success. You feel more like you’re in a hip restaurant than a trade show booth, which is a pretty cool effect.

Planning Your Portable Trade Show Experience

Portable trade show booths are easy to transport and cost effective. But they don’t have to look and feel cheap. Even if you’re planning your trade show booth on a budget, get creative with your booth and the accessories within it to amplify your visitors’ experience. Make sure to create a detailed master plan to ensure maximum use of your budget, staff and time.

First of all, let’s talk about the master plan. Begin this document well ahead of the trade show you will be attending. You will most likely start with a budget that has been allocated to this trade show. The budget will need to cover:

  • Trade show entry fees
  • Marketing before and during the show
  • Portable trade show booth purchase
  • Trade show booth shipping and material handling fees
  • Staffing costs, to include travel, lodging and food expenses
  • Giveaways
  • Technology
  • Show site services (flooring, electrical, rigging and labor, if applicable)

Your exhibit marketing strategy should include your purpose, goals, and final objective. Draft this before you are influenced by budget parameters. Your exhibit strategy should be consistent with your general marketing strategy. Creating an exhibit marketing strategy may reveal what type of exhibit or exhibits are best suited for your company. If your company plans to attend numerous shows back-to-back using a 10 x 10 space, you may want to evaluate portable or modular exhibits. If your company does a number of smaller inline booths along with a few major shows, then you’ll want to consider portable/modular or hybrid exhibits. When the strategy is to make a huge impact at a major industry show, you’ll want to evaluate modular, hybrid, and custom exhibits.

Choosing a Portable Trade Show Booth

There are varying levels of portable trade show booth prices. Fortunately, Sourcing a budget friendly and quality display is becoming easier today as manufactures strive to improve the end user experience.  Make sure not to max out your budget on the display, as you’ll want to make sure to offer really creative giveaways and have your best staff working the booth.

Chances are you’ll purchase your exhibit from a local exhibit company. Exhibit companies have been around for decades and understand exhibits and trade shows. Originally, exhibits were custom-crafted. Then, exhibit systems evolved as an alternative to the high cost of custom craftsmanship. Now, there are multiple exhibit categories. Exhibit systems, which includes portable, modular, and hybrid exhibits, are evolving towards custom-crafted exhibits, and custom-crafted exhibits are evolving towards exhibit systems. Both have distinct advantages and exhibit companies work hard to carve out distinct niches along the custom to portable spectrum. The exhibit (or exhibits) that best fits your company’s exhibit marketing strategy will slot in somewhere along this spectrum. This is where an exhibit consultant can be very useful. Ultimately, an exhibit consultant wants to help you maximize your exhibit marketing potential.

Staffing Your Booth

Staffing your booth with personable people who have a proven track record of building relationships is equally as important as the look of the booth itself. Make sure to spend time considering who will help your company to shine, and offer them some training that is specific to communicating with trade show attendees. A few tips are:

  • If an attendee says they’re just looking, don’t push. Welcome them to browse your display, point out some items that you are featuring, and then leave them be. If they need something, they’ll come to you.
  • Try a unique greeting, something more creative than “May I help you?” or “How are you?”
  • Be available. Make sure that no one has to wait in line – this means your booth is understaffed. If someone has a question, a staff member should always be moments away from answering it
  • Be approachable. Don’t cross your arms or fidget and don’t sit there and talk to just your colleagues. Be enthusiastic about your product. Smile and be polite.
  • No eating and keep that booth clean and clutter free!

Giveaways

There are thousands of options for trade show giveaways, and remember that everyone else in the room will have some too. For this reason, think of something unique that your attendees will actually use. What are some of the items that you would use, and actually like? Pens and sticky notes are boring – yes, people use them, but let’s think outside the box, here. In addition to considering what people may actually use, consider the specific clients you are serving. Are they creative? Perhaps a sketch book with inspirational quotes could be a nice giveaway. Are they in their 20s and 30s? Cell phone accessories like PopSockets and pockets that adhere to the back of the phone are useful and can be beautiful. Is your audience earth-friendly? Metal drinking straws in a case or pouch with your logo will be useful for years to come. Do some research and come up with some creative giveaways specifically geared toward your audience.

Technology

The technology you choose will probably be partially related to your products and partially related to the design of your portable booth. For example, you may have iPads available to place orders, show product demos, or showcase new software. There are even tables with touch screens that allow you to showcase your product line on the surface.backlit trade show portable display You may want portable roll up LED screens incorporated into the booth to screen a promotional video about a new product line or introducing your company. Do some research or reach out to a portable trade show booth seller (like ADM Two), to see what some options are for spicing up your portable display.

Creating Value with Portable Booths

Portable inline booths can be incredibly effective. If you are strategic about the way you lay out and staff your booth, you can enjoy the savings and ease of setup that comes with having a modern inline exhibit with the return on investment of a much larger booth.

We recently ran into an article in one of our favorite trade show publications, Exhibitor Magazine, about ways to maximize small exhibits. Read more in the article, Strategic Small-Booth Designs. This is an incredibly useful guide for those wishing to exhibit on a smaller scale. Below you will find an info-graphic that provides a quick checklist of features to include in your booth, depending on your goals.

It so happens that we are having a sale on our portable exhibits as well. Please visit our IDEA GALLERY for 10% off our portable inline exhibits.

Case Study: Brain Harmony Portable Display

trade show product kiosk

When it comes to solving portable display needs, people often assume that smaller projects are always easier, but such is not the case. In many cases, as in the case with the Brain Harmony display, we wanted to create something with a big impact, but that could be transported via a personal vehicle and set up by one person.

Making a big impact is actually much easier with a large booth and budget for customization. In that case, we can pull out all the stops, using whatever materials we want and putting together unique pieces and visuals that really allow a brand to stand strong in the trade show. Not only did the display need to be portable, it needed to have easy to change graphics that could be switched out in the field, on the spot.

We decided to use the Xpressions portable multi-graphic panel pop-up system. This portable display allows the graphics to stay attached to the frame for storage, plus the hardware is super lightweight, an essential for a one person setup. If you look at the final display though, it’s quite impactful and beautiful! We used large, exceptional photographs for effect, keeping the supporting graphics and text simple for a tasteful presentation. The photographs were already a part of the Brain Harmony media library, so they were not shot specifically for this project. For that reason, we had to do some manipulation to a few of the photos to maintain consistency in the layout, but the result is a seamless graphic piece that really stands out!
